Ryszard WINIARSKI (Polish, born 1936 in Lwów), 1953-1966 studied at the Technical Institute and simultaneous painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His first series of paintings, entitled Attemps at the visual presentation of statistical arrangements brought the artist international fame. Basic units are white and black squares and random sequences are gained by throwing a coin or dice. In 1960s and 1970s Winiarski created stage settings and objects enviromental arrangements. He participated in the prestigious artistic events abroad such as Biennial in Sao Paulo (1969), Biennial of Constructivism in Nuremberg (1969 and 1971) and the Construction in process in Munich (1985).

"In accordance with his conception his pictures were the result of two combined factors: accident and a programme. The programme would anticipate for instance two alternative sizes of the squares, which would divide the canvas, but choice of the size was influenced by accident, by the tossing of a coin or die. Similarly by lot was decided the picture's corner form which the squares would be filled with colour. A toss of the coin decided, too, whether the square filled would be black or remain white.
     His intention was to reject the antiquated rules of traditional aesthetics, all the obligatory and taught at schools methods of painting, including the ways of composition, of using colours and shades. Winiarski rejected the very idea of a picture as a work of art shaped by the artist and bearing the marks of his individuality. He tried to create impersonal art, deprived of any emotions, an art which cannot be evaluated from the aesthetic point of view but whose sense can be explained rationally, logically and with precision. That is why he did not call the objects created by him pictures but "Attempts at a visual presentation of statistical arrangements".
